Ellen Graves Hughes

Ellen Graves Hughes, 95 passed away on April 25, 2012 at RoseWood Village on Greenbrier Drive. She was born in North Garden, Virginia on August 18, 1916, the daughter of the late Walker Hiawatha and Alice Clemmons Graves. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Hughes; her brothers, Robert W. Graves and Alfred W. Graves; and her sisters, Blanche V. Graves, Louise G. Thacker, Julia G. Woodie, and Mary G. Haney.

She is survived by several nieces, Lillie Mae Brown of Bumpass, Barbara Clark of Crozet, Penny Houchens of Orange, and Pamela Higgins of Charlottesville, Nancy Wright of Troy, Mazsie Donald of Crozet, Dotty Faris of Afton; and several nephews, Otis Haney of Hollywood, Florida, Sidney Thacker of Chesapeake, Earnest Thacker of Charlottesville, Alfred Thacker of Chesapeake and Billy Thacker of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Red Hill High School, she worked as a weaver for 47 years at Frank Ix & Sons. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church.

Special thanks from the family to the staff at RoseWood Village for the excellent care she received these past five years and to the Hospice of the Piedmont.

A graveside service will be held at Monticello Memory Gardens at 2:00 pm Friday April 27, 2012 Reverend Al Horton will officiate. The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Thursday April 26, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 101 East Jefferson Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
